Gamer, 28, kills mom after blaming her for broken headset, police say

Ceres officers are investigating a homicide after officials say a man shot and killed his mother in their home.

Investigators with the Ceres Police Department said Matthew Nicholson, 28, was alone in his room late Thursday when he started yelling angrily after losing a video game. The 68-year-old victim was transported to an area hospital where she later died.

Matthew Nicholson, 28, was playing video games in the bedroom of his Ceres, Calif., home on Wednesday night when an argument broke out with his mother Lydia Nicholson. When his mother went to check on him, he began to argue with her and ended up breaking the headset to his video game, police said.

Nicholson grabbed a handgun from inside home and fired two rounds into a wall before turning the gun on his mother and shooting her in the head.

A family friend told Fox40, "I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun jammed".

About 9:48 p.m. Thursday night, January 11, Ceres officers were dispatched on a report of a woman shot inside a home, according to police. (Facebook) Lydia Nicholson cuddles a baby in a family photo.

Nicholson then ran out and began driving to a relative's home in Riverbank, CA.

Ceres police took Nicholas to the police department for questioning then later booked him into the Stanislaus County Jail where he's being held without bail.
