Gatwick joins record-breaking year

The airport's long-haul network grew to 63 connections in 2017, and Gatwick welcomed 7.3 million long-haul passengers across the year - an increase of nearly one million compared with 2016.

Scotland's two largest airports have had a record year after passenger numbers soared.

Glasgow airport boosted passenger numbers by 5.8 per cent to 9.9 million a year ago to record its best 12 months since opening in 1966. Gatwick's long-haul network grew to 63 connections a year ago, with 7.3m people opting to fly long-haul, up almost a million on 2016.

The success of long haul routes to Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Houston, combined with continued strong demand for summer holidays to Spain, Greece and the Canary Islands saw Manchester Airport play an ever more important role in connecting the north of England with global destinations.

Some 1.7 million metric tonnes of cargo passed through the airport, up 10.2 per cent.

"As we look ahead to 2018, we expect that passenger numbers will continue to grow and we're looking forward to the launch of a new route to Seattle with Thomas Cook Airlines".

There was a 3.3 per cent rise in passengers travelling on domestic flights.

London's Heathrow Airport, which has operated its two runways close to capacity since the start of the decade, managed to squeeze in 2.3 million more passengers past year as airlines deployed bigger planes and carried more people per flight.

The figures exclude Bournemouth Airport which was sold to RCA in December 2017. In December 2017, traffic was up +1.5% year-on-year to 1.8 million.

"The past year has been a very busy and exciting time at London Stansted with passenger numbers and the range of destinations directly available from the airport both reaching all-time highs", said London Stansted Airport CEO Ken O'Toole.
