GC sports star Sally Pearson nominated for Laureus World Sports Award

'2017 was an incredible year for me and I'm overwhelmed with the support and recognition I've already received but winning a Laureus statuette would be awesome'.

Team New Zealand, who stormed to America's Cup glory in June, have been shortlisted for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards Team of the Year.

The New Zealand sailors up against the French Davis Cup team, Golden State Warriors, Mercedes-AMG Petronas (Formula 1), New England Patriots and Real Madrid.

The eventual winners, as voted for by members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, will be revealed in Monaco on February 27.

"Emirates Team New Zealand are truly honoured to be nominated for this prestigious award alongside some other remarkable teams", CEO Grant Dalton said.

The sporting moment prize, however, will be decided by an online vote. Sally hadn't competed in a global championship between 2013 and 2017.

British distance runner Mo Farah, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, cyclist Chris Froome, tennis stars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo have been nominated for Sportsman of the Year.

Semenya, a three-time 800m world champion, is among a tough competition for the top prize which includes Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza and the all-American quartet of Serena Williams, 16-time world athletics championship medalist Allyson Felix, overall World Cup champion skier Mikaela Shiffrin and 19-year-old swimming sensation, Katie Ledecky.

The team is shortlisted alongside NBA Champions Golden State Warriors, Formula One World Champions Mercedes, Super Bowl champions New England Patriots, football's Champions League winners Real Madrid and tennis' France Davis Cup Team.

Anthony Joshua (GB) boxing, Kylian Mbappe (France) football, Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) tennis, Sergio Garcia (Spain) golf, Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) basketball, Caeleb Dressel (US) swimming.

Federer, who already won 4 Laureus Awards from 2005 to 2008 (one per year) has been nominated for the "ComeBack of the Year" section as well: other candidates are Valentino Rossi, Justin Gatlin, Sally Pearson and two football teams, Barcellona and Chapecoense.
