German Nurse Who Killed Patients Indicted in nearly 100 More Killings

His trial heard how he gave patients overdoses of heart medication and other drugs because he enjoyed the feeling of being able to resuscitate them.

A nurse in Germany who was serving a life sentence for two murders has now been charged with the deaths of a further 97 individuals.

The public prosecutor of Oldenburg, Germany charged convicted serial killer Niels Hoegel for 97 additional counts of murder on Monday, Spiegel online reported. Hoegel was thought to have killed his victims while working at a clinic in Oldenburg from 1999-2002 and again in Delmenhorst from 2003-2005, according to Yahoo News.

Of the newly discovered cases, 62 patients died in the Delmenhorst hospital near the northern city of Bremen and 35 in a clinic in Oldenburg.

The third trial of Niels Hoegel, 41, is expected to start later this year, a court spokesman in the northern city of Oldenburg said. That announcement came after investigators completed examinations on patients who died when he was a nurse.

In three additional cases investigators deemed suspicious, tests didn't produce enough evidence to add them to the charge sheet. Hoegel confessed that he would bring patients to the brink of death before attempting to revive them in order to look like a savior in front of his colleagues.

"From the prosecutorial point of view, the accused Niels H accepted, at least tacitly, in all cases the death of the patients due to the effects of the drugs", the prosecutors said in a statement.

They also exhumed 134 bodies from 67 cemeteries, and questioned Hoegel six times.

As part of a wider investigation involving both hospitals, police and prosecutors reviewed more than 500 patient files and hundreds more hospital records.
