Google pays tribute to Mahasweta Devi with a Doodle

Today would have been the 92nd birthday of Mahasweta Devi and to commemorate this day, Google has come out with a Doodle honouring her, which shows Mahasweta Devi in the foreground and tribal people, whose cause she championed, in the background.

Hailing from a family of prolific playwrights and writers, Mahasweta Devi wielded the power of the pen to bring to light the plight of "suffering spectators" in our fast-developing country.

Devi, who won the the Sahitya Akademi award in 1979, wrote 100 novels and 20 collection of short stories. Educated in Dhaka prior to India's independence, Mahasweta went on to study in Santiniketan and got her B.A from Visva-Bharati University and M.A in English from Calcutta University.

Devi is well known for her crusade for the rights and empowerment of the Lodha and Shabar, the tribal people from West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Devi was known not just for her writing but also for dedicating her life for the welfare of tribals across India. Several of her works have been adapted in films over the years. She also campaigned against the former Left Front government's land acquisition policies in Singur and Nandigram. She had said, "My India still lives behind a curtain of darkness".

She was awarded Padma Shri for social work in 1986, Padma Vibhushan in 2006 and Banga Bibhushan in 2011.

Her novels were turned into award-winning movies like Govind Nihalani's 1998 movie Hazar Chaurasi Ki Ma and Kalpana Lajmi's Rudali. She passed away on July 28, 2016, at the age of 90, in Kolkata, West Bengal.
