Google Testing New Crowdsourced 'Hyperlocal' News App, Bulletin

The idea is for people to contribute "hyperlocal stories about your community, for your community, right from your phone".

According to the search giant, the app makes it "effortless to put a spotlight on inspiring stories that aren't being told" by local media.

Users can tell their story by sharing photos, videos, or text, much in the same way as you would with a blog but with a ready-made audience. "If you are comfortable taking photos or sending messages, you can create a Bulletin story!" They appear to be hooked in with Google News. If you want to request early access and you live in one of those cities, you can do so right here.

Bulletin stories are public and discoverable via Google search, social networks, or links sent via email and messaging apps. Nextdoor is a "private social network" for your neighborhood that's described as the "best way to stay informed about what's going on in your neighborhood".

In the a year ago, Google came under a lot of scrutiny for spreading misinformation by pushing fake-news stories to the top of its search algorithm.

Google has launched a new app called Bulletin that's created to facilitate the sharing of "hyperlocal" stories about your community.

Google has said it's working to improve its algorithm to proliferate verified news, so it'll be interesting to see how this new tool plays into that plan.

Meanwhile, Bulletin isn't the only community-focused service out there. Bulletin content will also be available instantly on Google News. The organization portrayed Bulletin as a route for others to impart data of neighborhood intrigue, similar to book shop readings, secondary school wearing occasions, or data about road terminations, for instance. "We are excited to see how people use the app during this pilot phase".
