Haitian immigrants react to derogatory Trump comment

In Thursday's meeting, lawmakers were reportedly proposing restoring the Temporary Protected Status permits for certain countries, while offering $1.5bn for a wall that Trump wants built on the USA border with Mexico.

It's been widely reported that President Trump asked during immigration negotiations between congressional leaders why are we letting people from "sh*thole countries" to come here.

In a later tweet, Trump focused on remarks attributed to him about Haiti, saying: "Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country". "Why are we having all these people from s***hole countries come here?" the President reportedly asked lawmakers, arguing that the USA should have more people coming from countries like Norway.

"My colleague, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC spoke up and made a direct comment on what the president said". And while it would be foolish to pretend some of these sorts of people aren't among Trump's base, that doesn't mean everyone else has to shut up and go along when the president tries to write national policy with ink tainted by their ideology.

"Good morning from the greatest most attractive "shithole country" in the world!"

A White House official said Trump also suggested he would be open to more immigrants from Asian countries because he felt that they help the United States economically.

Botswana summoned the United States ambassador to the country to "clarify if Botswana is regarded as a "shithole" country", according to a foreign ministry statement which called Mr Trump's comments "irresponsible, reprehensible and racist". Trump reportedly asked seven members of Congress present at the meeting. He wants more funding for the wall, which is symbolic, yes, but that's exactly the point: As Frank Sharry of America's Voice puts it to me, the wall is a "middle finger to Latin America", a statement that "we don't want your kind".

He said Trump used the most vulgar term "more than once".

It said the "remarks dishonour the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity".

Biden weighed in after the president on Twitter denied making the comment as reported, although Democratic Senator Richard Durbin of IL directly contradicted him.

Botswana also said it had summoned the United States ambassador to that country, Earl Miller, to "express its displeasure" and had asked Miller whether Botswana "is regarded as a "s**thole" country". "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians", Trump tweeted.

At least 10,000 Haitian immigrants came to Southwest Florida after a 2010 natural disaster devastated their nation.

I know the bipartisan proposal discussed at the White House can get a lot of support from both sides.

"This is like throwing gasoline to the fire", Representative Adriano Espaillat, a New York Democrat, said of Trump's reported language.

This wouldn't be the president's first racially charged remark. "That's where he used these vile and vulgar comments, calling the nations they come from "shitholes" ― the exact word used by the president not just once, but repeatedly".

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Trump used the word "shithole" during a meeting on immigration reform to refer to African countries and Haiti.

The president's Twitter posts on Friday morning referred to the meeting with lawmakers a day earlier about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, the Obama-era effort that provided temporary work permits and reprieves from deportation to immigrants brought to the United States as children by their parents. "All I can say is people from every nationality contribute across all industries, and two women from Trinidad and Ghana cared for my mother like she was their own". Typically they've been better qualified to lead a nation, too.
