Haryana folk singer Mamta Sharma found dead in Rohtak

The body of a Haryanvi folk singer, with her throat slit, was found in Haryana's Baniyani village of Rohtak district on Thursday. However, an FIR was later filed at the Kalanaur police station. Kumar said on the way, they came across a auto in the Lahli village, as per a Hindustan Times report. Sharma left in that auto, telling Kumar she would join him in Gohana after an hour. "But the police did nothing", he said.

This is not the first murder of a folk singer in Haryana.

Over the years, the lyrics have become overtly lewd, the dance gestures raunchy, and the crowds, which used to have fair smattering of women and children till a few years ago, now largely consist of men.

It was just past year in October when news headlines reported the murder of Haryana folk singer Harshita Dahiya. Dahiya had released videos on social media talking about the harassment she had been facing.

Police have registered a murder case against certain unknown people and the investigation is on.

The hugely popular folk performer Sapna Chaudhry, 27, who made it to Bigg Boss 11, had attempted suicide in 2016, after she allegedly made uncharitable remarks about Dalits in one of her songs.

Another singer, Lalita Sharma, had been killed in 2015 along with her husband when she was seven months pregnant. Her seven-year-old son had been the witness in the case, in which a domestic help and his accomplice were arrested. In 2012, Binu Chaudhary, a popular singer, was murdered.

Dahiya's brother-in-law, notorious gangster Dinesh Karala, who was lodged in jail at the time, confessed to getting her killed.
