Hearthstone: Blizzard announces Ranked Mode changes

Blizzard is shaking up Hearthstone's ranked play progression system, and specifically how you'll shuffle down levels at the end of each month.

Fans of cosmetic card backs, you're also in luck: Monthly card backs only require 5 ranked wins to unlock.

This change in the game's ranking structure ensures that players will be matched more evenly at the beginning of each season, with skill being the leading factor attributed to climbing the ladder.

As a player that often feels like I'm hitting a wall after passing Rank 20 this change has been a long time coming and I'm excited for the March season. So a Legend player will go to Rank 4.

Speaking of which, the current card back will now be earned after five wins - wherever you are on the ladder. So, this change will also help make sure that getting monthly rewards doesn't become more challenging. Legend counted as zero, so legend players would start at rank 16 with three stars.

Overall, these are welcome changes for anyone that wishes to obtain the rank of Legend and compete in Legend ranks for a higher regional ranking and possible competitive points. Though, reward chests will still remain to increase in value with each rank. What do you make of these changes?

Since these changes are pretty big, there'll also be a transitionary period while elements of both systems are in place, and for more on the update as a whole check out the developer diary below. Before the update, a Rank 20 goal was just 10 wins away before players won a cardback. Now they've detailed exactly what form those changes will take, and when they'll be implemented - this March, at the start of the next season.
