House OKs Surveillance Renewal, Rejects Warrant Amendment

House OKs Surveillance Renewal, Rejects Warrant Amendment

In the Facebook video below, Massie, a reliable defender of privacy rights and limited government, talks about the "interesting coalition of the left and the right" that opposes renewing Section 702.

"The tweet read: "'House votes on controversial FISA ACT today.' This is the act that may have been used, with the help of the discredited and phony Dossier, to so badly surveil and abuse the Trump Campaign by the previous administration and others?" Trump tweeted Thursday morning.

But after the second tweet by the President - expressing support for the ยง702 FISA reauthorization - things calmed down, and the House moved to approve the plan.

The Amash amendment would replace the text of the HPSCI-backed bill with that of the USA RIGHTS Act, introduced in the Senate by Kentucky senator Rand Paul and OR senator Ron Wyden.

The bill also addresses the so-called "about" collection, a practice where the NSA may search through communications, including those of American citizens, in order to collect communications that are "about" a targeted non-American individual. Justin Amash, R-Mich., and Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., failed by a vote of 183-233.

The fight over a key surveillance authority is pitting House committees against each other and fueling intraparty tension, as lawmakers dive into the debate over the power's renewal this week.

For almost two hours, the commander in chief even broke with his own White House's stance on whether the law should remain on the books.

Trump later clarified that he "has personally directed the fix to the unmasking process since taking office and today's vote is about foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land". Logically, the president of the United States of America listened to the person on his TV and sent a tweet that contradicted the position his own White House and national security team have taken on the bill. In a tweet Sen.

In a blast email, the Democratic whip shop called the social media posts "the latest example of President Trump undermining American security and not knowing what's happening in Congress".

"I don't understand why Donald Trump is in favor of this", Judge Andrew Napolitano, a Fox News senior judicial analyst, said on the network.

Nearly 120 minutes after the first FISA tweet came another from Trump's personal account, this one saying the law should be reauthorized. "Mr. President, this is not the way to go".

If hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, and Ainsley Earhardt did a segment on how trains cause cancer, the president would immediately tweet: "TRAINS ARE KILLING HARDWORKING AMERICANS!"

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said because of recent accusations of bias directed at the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation there needs to be "more oversight of the intelligence community" because "men are not angels", a reference to a quote from James Madison.

What we've learned from this episode - one I'm sure Republican lawmakers who have spent months working to pass the reauthorization really enjoyed - is that "Fox and Friends" can get President Trump to do whatever it wants.

"I think the underlying bill will pass". NBC News reported that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi asked for a delay as well.

"I can tell you, I've been on the intelligence committee for 17 years, the government has never said, never once said it needed 702 for typical crimes", Wyden said.

Nunes said his bill strengthens privacy protections "without hindering the ability of our intelligence professionals to monitor terror suspects, analyze collected data, and keep us safe". While they never questioned the outcome Thursday, some Republicans were frustrated by the mixed messages from the White House.

"The conversations we've been having. intensely for the last few days is 702".
