IN vs. Michigan State

IN vs. Michigan State

Coming up from Breslin Center on Friday, the Indiana Hoosiers and the Michigan State Spartans will be meeting up in college basketball activity.

IN is playing as well as it has all season, having won three straight - downing Minnesota, Penn State and Northwestern - and five of its last six.

The opponent in this one, in 11-7 (4-2), might be in the tournament if the program refused to play mid-major teams within the Hoosier state. Robert Johnson, the team's leading scorer, had 17 points in that game. The Hoosiers, who lost 6-10 sophomore De'Ron Davis, the team leader in blocks (1.5) and second on the team in rebounds (4.3) per game for the season due to a leg injury, are 3-0 since his departure, but they could use his size and presence against a Michigan State squad that is tops in the Big Ten in rebounds (42.4), rebounding margin (+11.3) and blocks (8.0) per game.

Michigan State 16-3 (4-2) is in a rut right now and needs to find a way to stop it.

Tyler Sheehy and Tommy Novak each scored shorthanded goals in Minnesota's three-goal second period, and Sheehy scored the victor with 2:48 left in the third period as the Gophers (14-12-1, 5-9-1-1 Big Ten) held off the last-place Spartans (9-15-1, 3-11-1-1).

Bridges is the leading scorer for Michigan State on the year with 16.7 PPG and 7.4 RPG, while Nick Ward has 14.3 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

Minnesota (14-12-1 overall, 5-9-1-1 Big Ten) also picked up two assists from Brent Gates Jr. while Steve Johnson, Jack Ramsey and Tommy Novak added goals for the Maroon & Gold.

Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann became the first Big Ten coach since 1923 to win his first seven games in the conference with Wednesday's victory.

The teams will finish the series on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in NY as part of the Big Ten's Super Saturday Doubleheader.

The Hoosiers aren't necessarily overwhelming on the scoreboard, but they've been playing fairly well lately and have notched a few solid wins. That said, I think the Spartans have the advantage here so I'll take Michigan State.
