India 183-5 at stumps on day two

India reached 183/5 at the end of day 2 of the second Test match against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

India skipper Virat Kohli celebrates after taking a catch at slips to dismiss SA batsman Quinton de Kock on Day One of the second Test at Centurion on Saturday.

"Most of them have played in South Africa, they have been there and other countries like Australia, England and New Zealand, they know what to do, they just need time in the middle and once they get going, this wicket will suit Indian batsman".

But the second run out that accounted for Vernon Philander offered no such excuse. Kohli and Murali Vijay (46) put together a third-wicket stand of 79 runs. But the first two sessions was all about chase the leather for the Indian fielders as the South Africa batsmen made hay.

Amla had carded scores of 3 and 0 in the first Test at Newlands, but on this surface he looked at ease from the beginning to the end of his knock, which came in unfortunate fashion. The former cricketer believes that Virat Kohli was equally responsible for the 72-run defeat in opening test and if he is unable to perform at Centurion as well, then he "should drop himself".

In their reply, India got off to a bad start as both KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara departed early.

Perhaps he underestimated how quickly Ngidi can move for a big man, but Pujara set off for what always looked a risky single.

Ngidi bowled a fiery first four-over spell on Test debut, egged on by the home crowd, but he couldn't etch out a breakthrough before tea. Though things did turn back for the visitors by the evening as a couple of run outs in the third session and good consistent bowling from R Ashwin saw the Indians claw back into the game.nearly all the South Africa batsmen got starts, with only Dean Elgar (31) and AB de Villiers (20) failing to convert them into a big ones and Quinton de Kock getting out for a duck. He asked for DRS review and was a tad unlucky as the edge was doubtful.

That was not to be as Keshav Maharaj (18) and Kagiso Rabada (11) made minimal impact.

There were a few nervous moments but the duo dug their heels in to make sure India enjoyed their tea without any further hiccups. Du Plessis took full advantage, hitting boundaries in quick succession to bring up his side's 300, and then his own fifty.

Shami took his 100th Test wicket in his 29th Test when he had Maharaj caught behind to end a stubborn seventh wicket partnership of 31. "He is a massive competitor as everyone sees on the TV, but it's great to see that he has got good values that people off the field might not see". Two overs later, Ishant also bowled du Plessis to change the course of the morning session again.
