India reiterates status quo being maintained in Doklam

India reiterates status quo being maintained in Doklam

Donglong (Doklam) always belongs to China and is always under China's effective jurisdiction.

"On Wednesday, Indian Army chief Bipin Rawat said at the Raisina Dialogue, organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and think-tank Observer Research Foundation, that the India-China "bonhomie" before the Doklam standoff has returned, but added that one has to be prepared for anything".

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday said that it was entitled to build infrastructure in Doklam, but refused to comment on the news reports that used satellite pictures to claim that Beijing was building a military complex at the site, The Hindu reported.

"You must be quite clear".

"China is exercising its sovereignty in its own territory". It's legitimate and justified.

Indian and Chinese troops had been locked in a stand-off for over two months previous year in the Dokalam area near Sikkim before "disengaging" on August 28. "Just as China will not make comments about Indian construction of infrastructure on India's territory, we hope other countries will not make comment on China's construction of infrastructure on its territory".

Nearly five months after India and China ended a 70-day standoff in Doklam or Doka La that lies to the east of Sikkim, the latest images show massive structures in Doklam, as close as 81 metres to the point of face-off between Indian and Chinese troops.

Asked if there could be another stand-off, Lu said: "We hope Indian side learn the lesson and avoids the incident to happen again".

India and China have established mechanisms which they use to resolve any "misunderstanding", the external affairs ministry said today and asserted that it was keeping a "constant vigil" on the situation in Doklam.

Mr Surjewala said the Congress has always maintained that there can be no political viewpoints on Doklam and the sole criteria needs to be "national interest", which needs to protected at all costs.

He reiterated that there is no change in the status quo between the two countries at the Doklam sector. "Any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate and mischievous", a statement by the ministry had said.
