India thrash Australia by 100 runs in U-19 World Cup

India and Australia started their preparations for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018 with comfortable victories in the warm-up matches being played in Christchurch, before the 16-team tournament gets underway on January 13.

Earlier, Team India won the toss and chose to bat first.

Indian pacers Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti then picked up three wickets each as the Australians were dismissed for 228 in 42.5 overs. Nagarkoti hit the deck consistently at a speed in the range of 150kmph and was well supported by Mavi, who also clocked 145 at times. J. Edwards top scored for Australia with 78. Alongside Shaw, others who are expected to lead India's charge are Himanshu Rana and Shubhman Gill.

Shaw received a second reprieve, again off Sutherland's bowling, when he mistimed a pull only to be caught at deep backward square.

However, Australia lost their final eight wickets for just 83 despite a fighting knock of 39 off 30 balls from wicketkeeper Baxter Holt.

They put together an opening stand of 180 runs to gift a strong foundation to the Indian innings.

The U19 World Cup has been termed as the "stepping stone" for the young cricketers and on Sunday, India and Australia gave it a true meaning.

After the opener's departure, it was Shubham Gill who added on the scoresheet with his 63 run knock which consisted of six fours and one six. Abhishek Sharma though managed to come up with a 8-ball 23-run cameo which propelled India past the 300-run mark.

Except for Edwards, the rest of the the Australian bowlers had a forgettable day although off-spinner Param Uppal was economical over his eight overs with figures of 1/35.

Asked if there are any Indian players in particular he thinks could have a lot of success at this tournament, Dravid said, "We've been playing some very good cricket of late, so rather than focusing on individuals and naming a few people, we would like to work as a team".

Australian team had a very strong competition and they started decently enough, Jack Edwards made a respectable, 73 runs, but his partners were weak, and could hold on a steady partnership, thus the wickets began to fall quickly and steadily, making it hard for the team to recover.
