Iran rejects Trump's demand for changes to Obama-era nuclear deal

European Union powers on Thursday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to endorse a key nuclear agreement with Iran saying the deal is essential for worldwide security.

By thus "decertifying" the arrangement, he opened a window for Congress to reimpose sanctions, but to date, it has not done so - leaving the issue of the waivers.

He said the idea of forming political coalitions, excluding others and considering those who are not with us as enemies had been imposed by the hegemonic powers on the world, adding that such ideas have directed the world toward enmity, extremism and conflicts, reports IRNA news agency.

One of the criticisms levelled at the nuclear deal is that it does nothing to address Iran's continuing ballistic missile program and involvement in conflicts such as Yemen and Syria.

The 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was signed by the U.S. under the previous administration of president Barack Obama as well as Iran, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

Trump said he had reluctantly agreed to extend the waivers only to secure the support of America's European allies to fix the agreement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamed Javad Zarif accused Trump of "maliciously violating" the nuclear deal. In the absence of such an agreement, the United States will not again waive sanctions in order to stay in the Iran nuclear deal.

"And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately".

According to the White House, any new Iran deal would have to cover Iran's ballistic missiles and limit its nuclear breakout period indefinitely.

US officials and others familiar with the administration's deliberations told the Associated Press that Mr. Trump is likely to back the accord for now but that he may pair his decision with new, targeted sanctions on Iranian businesses and people.

The EU said in a statement it had taken note of Trump's decision and would assess its implications.

He was among those calling for a crackdown following a recent spate of anti-government protests across Iran.

Trump is required to renew the existing deal every 120 days under United States law.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Trump on Thursday and stressed France's determination to see "the strict application of the deal and the importance of all the signatories to respect it". He said remaining in the pact will give Congress more time to come up with bipartisan legislation regarding Iran.

Russian Federation spoke out strongly Friday in favor of the accord, ahead of the announcement of Trump's decision, calling it "the result of a consensus among many parties", in the words of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
