Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer to star in holiday comedy

Universal has acquired rights to an untitled holiday comedy pitch from Jessica Chastain's Freckle Films, with Chastain aboard to produce and star alongside Octavia Spencer. Chastain penned the treatment for the movie alongside Kelly Carmichael. Carmichael, Celine Rattray, and Trudie Styler are also on board to produce.

The untitled project is said to be in the same vein as comedy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, director John Hughes's 1987 classic, which depicted Steve Martin as a jumpy ad executive who finds himself on a comedic crucible of a journey back home to Chicago from a business trip in NY, joined by an awkwardly eccentric travelling salesman played by the late, great John Candy. Universal's Exec VP of production Erik Baiers and creative executive Mika Pryce will oversee the project for the studio. Spencer went on to win the Academy Award for best supporting actress. The pair remain on the awards circuit this year as well, having both been nominated for Golden Globes (Chastain for Molly's Game and Spencer for The Shape of Water). He is known for his work in "The Proposal", which was a hit at the box office.

Chastain, who is repped by CAA, Mosaic and Hansen Jacobson, is now in theaters in Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut Molly's Game and will next be seen in Fox's X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

What remains to be seen is just how closely to P, T&A this untitled comedy will hew and what roles Chastain and Spencer will take on. She is repped by WME, Viewpoint and Jackoway Tyerman.
