Jobs fading at Indiana plant that basked in Trump deal

Around 200 workers completed their final shifts on Thursday at Carrier Corp.in Indianapolis in the contemporary round of lay off at a plant President Donald Trump explored in December 2016 to promulgate a deal to save jobs and intercept its closure. That's down from some 1,600 factory and office jobs when Carrier announced plans in early 2016 to move production to Mexico.

In return, the company received $US7 million ($F14m) in state tax breaks to stay in Indiana.

The layoffs underscored the challenge of fulfilling Trump's campaign promise to save blue-collar American manufacturing jobs and prevent factories from relocating to other countries.

According to Carrier, about 215 people were let go, leaving about 1,100 workers at the plant.

A USA heating and air conditioning company laid off more than 200 factory workers Thursday despite a deal with Donald Trump meant to keep the plant from moving to Mexico. They involve 730 manufacturing jobs and about 300 engineering and administrative positions that were constant.

Last summer, 340 employees were also laid off.

United Technologies has announced the closure of another plant in IN, as well, and an industrial bearings plant past year also shuttered in the state to move to Mexico, laying off 350 workers. Renee Elliott, 45, who supported Trump in the 2016 election and was among those being given rest to on Thursday, said that he did save jobs but not mine.

"But he didn't save mine, he didn't save manufacturing jobs".

She now makes $US18 ($F36) per hour, taking advantage of overtime shifts, and sometimes works seven days a week.
