Kabul ambulance bomb toll hits 103, hundreds wounded

Another six people were killed in an assault claimed by Islamic State on the office of aid group Save the Children in the eastern city of Jalalabad. The government set aside Monday as a public holiday and Tuesday as a day of prayer for the victims, according to presidential spokesman Shah Hussain Murtazawi.

"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the deadly attack today in central Kabul, which was claimed by the Taliban.those responsible for todays attack must be brought to justice", said a statement attributable to UN Secretary Generals spokesperson. "The Afghan flag remains half-mast across the country and at Afghan diplomatic missions overseas".

It was the second successful Taliban attack in a week on targets in the city with high security. An ambulance loaded with explosives passed through a security checkpoint in the heart of the most secure part of capital city Kabul.

The Taliban claimed the attack, which dealt a major blow to the US -backed Afghan government.

The blast comes a week after gunmen attacked the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, killing at least 22 people during a 12-hour standoff with security forces.

Speaking in Amman, Jordan, on Sunday, Gen. Votel said the recent attacks have served only to bolster the U.S. commitment to Afghanistan.

'People were running everywhere to escape, there were wounded people lying on the ground, people with wounds to their arms, legs, heads, ' Hanif said.

U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass also condemned Saturday's attack, describing it as a "senseless and cowardly bombing".

Aerial footage showed two ambulances - the second one driven by the suicide attacker - approaching the first checkpoint, Barmak told reporters. "It's not safe to live in Afghanistan anymore", one man said.

Despite harsh criticism by politicians, security officials during a press conference on Sunday said their resignation was not the solution.

President Donald Trump has pursued a plan that involves sending thousands more US troops to Afghanistan and envisions shifting away from a "time-based" approach to one that more explicitly links USA assistance to concrete results from the Afghan government.

However, the Taliban have dismissed any suggestion that they have been weakened by the U.S. approach and say they will only agree to talk when global forces leave Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is under war for past sixteen years and last year the Afghan and United States officials accepted things are not going well in the country.
