Karachi mayor to give recommendations to SC

"You have been running a government in this city - it is your responsibility to solve the problems", the chief justice told the mayor.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, was hearing the constitutional petition filed by Shahab Usto, a concerned citizen and lawyer, at the apex court's Karachi registry.

"The government's job is being done by the court", he said.

The chief justice responded that these reasons did not absolve Akhtar of his responsibility to resolve the public problems.

Hearing the environmental pollution case, the chief justice wondered why there is a water shortage in the city.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal had appeared before the Supreme Court during a hearing in December a year ago.

After several months of delay, the chief justice, being chairman of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP), appointed Dr Abdul Rahim Awan as new secretary LJCP recently. The case was filed against the provincial government's failure to provide potable water, better sanitation, environment and associated issues. Strict action would be taken, if the court orders were violated, he said adding that the builder who violated the orders would be put behind bars. He also thanked all government officials who are attending the hearing for coming in on a holiday.

Justice Saqib Nisar remarked that reports are not enough, the court needs their implementations.

As the proceedings began, the court Nazir (official) submitted a report on the matter, which had been summoned the day before.

Separately, the Supreme Court on Sunday directed the Nazir of the Sindh High Court to seize all prohibitory injections used to increase milk production from retailers and wholesalers and asked the police and FIA to assist the court Nazir in such an exercise.

The court had earlier observed that injections given to cows and buffaloes lead to diseases like cancer in girls and adults consuming the milk.

On the issue of milk, the CJP directed that companies should differentiate between milk and tea-whiteners by mentioning them clearly on the packing. The court observed that a similar exercise was carried out in Punjab and now people were getting relief from such exercise.

The Chief Justice Pakistan instructed the milk companies that the milk companies have only four weeks to abide by the new instructed rulings.

The chief justice also ordered the court official to take Rs50,000 from all milk companies and have their product's tests conducted by Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
