Katie Couric returning to NBC for Winter Olympics opening ceremony

Former "Today" show host Katie Couric is returning to NBC for one night to co-host the opening ceremony for the Pyeongchang Olympics on February 9, the network announced Wednesday.

Couric will join host Mike Tirico in the booth at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony, which will air in primetime, Friday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.

Couric has returned to the network before, last in January 2017 to co-host "Today" while regular host Savannah Guthrie was on maternity leave. "She didn't go to the media, she made a complaint to NBC's human resources, and her evidence was so compelling that Matt was sacked on Tuesday night". The announcement was made by Jim Bell, NBC's president of Olympics production and programming, on Wednesday.

"During my years at NBC, I loved covering the Olympics and showcasing the hard work, dedication, and perseverance of athletes from around the world", Couric said in a statement.

Couric, who cohosted Today for 15 years before leaving in 2006, previously hosted Opening Ceremonies during the Olympics in Sydney, Australia; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Athens, Greece.

For this year's coverage, NBC has announced the opening ceremony will be live-streamed for the first time on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. "I'm also looking forward to working with [Tirico], who brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to everything he does".

Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira co-anchored NBC's opening ceremonies for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

"The whole thing has been very painful for me", Couric told PEOPLE of the scandal with Lauer.
