Koreas exchange lists of delegates for working-level talks

Monday's meeting at the village of Panmunjom followed high-level talks last week, in which South Korea agreed to lift sanctions temporarily to allow North Korean athletes to join the Winter Games.

Separately, South Korean Sports Ministry spokesman Hwang Seong Un said that the two Koreas have agreed in principle to field a joint women's ice hockey team.

South and North Korea reached this agreement during a working-level meeting at the Tongilgak (Unification Pavilion) on the North Korean side of Panmunjeom on January 15 that was held to arrange a visit to South Korea by a group of North Korean artists.

In a meeting with visiting U.S. lawmakers, South Korea's top diplomat on Monday discussed North Korea's participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and called for U.S. Congress' support for the successful hosting of the event.

Those have been high on the flashpoint peninsula as the North staged a flurry of nuclear and missile tests since previous year, and Mr Kim traded threats of war and personal insults with USA president Donald Trump.

Hyon Song Wol, Pyongyang's deputy chief delegate to the talks, is one of the most well-known women in North Korea and the leader of all-female musical group Moranbong Band, created in 2012 by order of leader Kim Jong Un and the closest thing the country has to a pop music ensemble to rival the South's world-famous K-pop genre. When Seoul hosted the 1988 summer Olympics, North Korea not only did not participate after talks to co-host the games collapsed, the rogue nation planted a bomb on a Korean Air passenger jet that killed 115 people. According to an official at South Korea's Unification Ministry, North Korea requested that the band be allowed to cross Panmunjeom and pass overland to South Korea.

More than 80 percent, however, were in favor of North Korea's participation at the upcoming Olympics. "We will work hard to improve North-South relationship but we will not sit by and tolerate foul actions that pour cold water on our effort."However, in a piece published Monday, the news agency was more positive, saying the suspension of delaying South Korea-US joint military maneuvers was "attributable to our bold measure for north-south dialogue and positive efforts for peace on the Peninsula and the strong demands of the public at home and overseas".

Korea Painting competition are going to visit PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games at South Korea in February.

They are most likely to cross the border by land, as travelling by air or ship could violate global sanctions imposed on the North.

Seoul says it will not repatriate a group of North Korean defectors who escaped through China two years ago, Chosun Ilbo reported. The North will send a performing squad of 140 Samjiyon Orchestra members to the South. 2.

The "scope and timing of the exercises suggest a renewed focus on getting the country's military prepared for what could be on the horizon with North Korea", it added. "Perhaps that is good news, perhaps not - we will see!" he said, sounding open to the possibility of an inter-Korean dialogue over Kim's rare overture. It was unclear if North Koreans had accepted that proposal.
