LG ThinQ WK9 Google Assistant Smart Speaker Announced

LG ThinQ WK9 Google Assistant Smart Speaker Announced

For CES 2018, that was Amazon's Alexa. It allows users to do video calls with Google Duo, provides YouTube video access, and manages all connected devices in the home.

And that could spell serious trouble for Amazon. But it hasn't been a huge factor in gadget announcements leading up to CES. Smart home discussions centered around voice-command interfaces and individual devices such as security cameras, lighting and thermostats. Lenovo is aiming to make Smart Display your all-in-one in-home entertainment/assistant device.

Asus is adding Alexa to its laptops, providing more competition for Cortana. On the flip side, you better sit back to see the biggest trend - or, put another way, whatever was overkill this particular year.

Qualcomm is looking forward to seeing what AI-enabled home devices are enabled using Android Things, Sweeney added.

But speakers are just the beginning. Sure, you could have Alexa or Google Assistant tell you there's a Starbucks 1.5 miles away from you. So, you can ask Bixby to play your favourite music tracks while cooking. Try doing that with an Echo Show.

Not that Amazon has been sitting still. But, for the most part, your vehicle will still respond to the same commands in the same way.

One noteworthy product was Hogar Controls' Milo, the world's first Z-Wave hub with Google Assistant built in. There, they're split into activities, such as Arts & Lifestyle, Travel & Transportation, Productivity, and Games & Fun. Last August, Amazon released AVS Device SDK that let you connect it with numerous devices.

When Lenovo Group Ltd chose to create an assistant-enabled screen last summer that would sit on a kitchen counter like a mini-TV, it turned to Google.

All of this is due to a shift in Google's thinking. However, now they've taken it a step further.

Notably, the first smart display powered by Google Assistant will come from Lenovo, which at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show announced the Lenovo Smart Display. These exhibits were staffed with dozens of bubbly Google representatives dressed in white jumpsuits. "What we're seeing is heavy competition between all the personal assistants", says Gartner analyst Brian Blau.

Meanwhile, Apple ( AAPL ) was a no-show at CES again and missed an opportunity to be part of the conversation about voice assistants and the smart home with its Siri and HomeKit efforts. With Amazon Alexa considered to be the leading assistant for the smart home, Google's been forced to demonstrate that Assistant is growing too.

Are smart devices always listening to you no matter what? Rather than opening your calendar, weather, traffic, and reminders, you can start your day by saying "hey Google" and it will walk you through your morning schedule, displaying calendar events, to-do items, traffic information for your commute, a rundown of the latest news and anything else you might want to know.

It will be interesting to see how Amazon responds to Google's aggressive moves at CES. Now, users have been able to issue voice commands to Android Auto in the past, but that was simply to invoke Google Voice search, which was limited in terms of functionality.

These are just some of the avaialble Google Actions. Even after Google catches up to Amazon - in some respects, it already has - both companies will continue to coexist, as each has strengths the other lacks. However, when it comes to the company's refrigeration units will use Alexa.
