LHC CJ summons Punjab IG as deadline to nab Zainab's murderer ends

Abubakar Khuda Buksh appeared before the court and told the bench that Inspector General of Police Arif Nawaz could not be present today as he was busy.

The head of the joint investigation team (JIT) formed to probe the rape-cum-murder of the minor turned up before the bench in response to its notice.

"The police does not take guidance from the court's decisions".

"Had the government taken previous such incidents seriously, this unfortunate case would not have surfaced", the opposition leader said.

"We are trying to close the gap between the courts and the police".

The chief justice directed the police officials to also use means of the investigation to reach the suspects and submit a progress report by Wednesday (tomorrow). He said that no timeframe could be given to the court for arrest of the culprits.

"I want the criminal to be captured, not killed in an encounter", the chief justice added.

The Supreme Court has barred Lahore High Court from hearing the incident. Her bruised body was found a few days later in a dump in the city.

The first case appeared on January 9, 2017, when the body of a six-year-old girl was recovered.

The news shocked the entire country with #JusticeforZainab becoming the rallying cry while violent protests broke out in Kasur. In April 2017, another six-year-old victim was found under similar circumstances. He opted the stance that a serial killer is behind all these rape and murder cases, and told that DNA samples of 400 suspects have been taken.

Two days back, LHC gave a 36-hour ultimatum to Punjab IG to arrest the suspect in the case who is still at large.
