Liberia Ruling Party Expels President Johnson Sirleaf

Liberia's outgoing ruling Unity Party has expelled President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for alleged breach of the party's constitution.

.

"The vote was taken as a result of several violations of the party's constitution and other acts inimical to the existence and reputation of the party", it added, noting that the party's constitution clearly provides for "support (of) the Unity Party's candidate through campaigning for the election".

Specifically, Johnson-Sirleaf whose 12-year tenure will end on January 22, was accused of breaching rules that require her to support the party's candidates in elections.

President-elect George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) speaks during an interview with Reuters at his residence in Monrovia, Liberia, Jan. 2, 2018.

Vice President Joseph Boakai, who served as Sirleaf's deputy for 12 years, lost the December 26 runoff elections to former worldwide soccer star George Weah.

Johnson Sirleaf was not allowed to run for re-election due to constitutional term limits. The party's assistant press secretary, Mohammed Ali, alleged that Sirleaf had ordered people to instead campaign for Weah.

Ms Sirleaf, who is a Nobel Peace Prize victor and Africa's first elected woman president, could not stand again. In the campaign just ended, however, she did not appear on a platform with him.

He will be sworn into office later this month.

Her administration has also faced repeated allegations of corruption and nepotism.
