Liverpool Echo Arena auto park fire disrupts horse show

It was reported that no people or animals have been hurt and it is not yet known how many cars have been damaged.

A spokeswoman for the Echo Arena said that the Liverpool International Horse Show, which had been running at the venue since 28 December, was cancelled because of the fire.

Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a multi-storey vehicle park on Liverpool's waterfront beside the Echo Arena, which was hosting an global horse show.

Six fire engines initially responded and are still tackling the blaze, with crews expected to remain on scene for some hours, Mersey Fire and Rescue Service said.

"Initial investigations indicate that an accidental fire within a vehicle caused other cars to ignite".

"Some horses were stabled on the lower level of the multi-storey auto park, where the fire was on the upper floors, and these were evacuated into the main arena or into the stables on the dock side".

Crowds were gathering for the final evening of the four-day Liverpool International Horse Show when the alarm was raised at about 4.40pm.

Crews were called to the building in the city centre around 4.45pm.

Horse & Hound's show reporter Margaret Shaw said: "Louise Saywell had just come into the arena for her round when she was asked to return to the gate".

"The fire is believed to involve a number of vehicles".

"We believe that all vehicles parked in the auto park have been destroyed and advise owners to contact their insurance companies".

Liverpool's mayor, Joe Anderson, said the blaze started in a Land Rover on the third level of the multi-storey auto park - and police believe this caused other vehicles to ignite.

Mersey Fire and Rescue Service said the vehicle park and some apartments nearby had been cleared of people while crews battle to bring the fire under control.
