'Long slog ahead': NYC ready for women's march

Over 200,000 people took to the streets of New York City yesterday afternoon for the second annual Women's March, all expressing their disgust with President Trump, sexual predators, wage inequality, the GOP, racists, guns, capitalism, lack of health care, attacks on abortion rights... a whole litany of the evils that seem to dominate the American landscape these days.

The scheduled speakers include Ashley Bennett, a Democrat who was elected Atlantic County, New Jersey, freeholder last November.

In Washington D.C., about 10,000 are expected on the National Mall even with the government shutdown. City officials wouldn't release official numbers Saturday.

Another march - a year in the making - is on. "It's so easy to become complacent and hide behind an iPhone or behind a computer and not join with your fellow people in exercising your right to demonstrate and exercising your rights in general", said event organizer Sarah Steinhardt. She says the march is giving protesters a sense they "still have some power". Among the goals of this year's march are getting more Democrats to run for public office and bolstering voter registration.

The weekend of demonstrations vowed to keep that momentum rolling with the theme "Power to the Polls" - a message created to drive national voter registration and maximise women's involvement in the mid-term elections this year, translating enthusiasm into concrete political action.

The marches aim to build on the movement launched previous year when more than three million people turned out nationwide, voicing opposition to the Mr Trump's swearing-in. Marchers got ready along Central Park West between 62nd and 82 and streets. They estimated some 300,000 attended Saturday's rally and march in downtown Chicago, exceeding last year's attendance.
