Mahadayi row: Goa Minister calls Kannadigas 'harami', Karnataka Congress to protest

However we hold no grudge against the people of Goa.

Palienkar reportedly made the remark while speaking to reporters in Goa after visiting the Kalasa-Banduri Nala project site at Kanakumbi in Belagavion on Saturday.

The Goa minister's alleged abusive comments drew flak on social media. The project aims to divert the Mahadayi river water at Kanakumbi.

Mr Palyekar, who is from the Goa Forward Party, an alliance partner of the ruling BJP in Goa, has claimed that he has been misquoted.

Patil assured on Monday, that after discussing the matter with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Karnataka government will take action against its neighbour for Palekar's remark calling Kannadigas "haramis" on Sunday. Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra are fighting a legal battle over water sharing from the Mahadayi river, also called Mandovi or Mhadei river.

Meanwhile, BJP State President BS Yeddyurappa sought an unconditional apology from Palienkar over his remarks.

"I have left for Kankumbi with my officials to inspect the violations by Karnataka and take stock of the situation", Palyekar said on Saturday. "In reality, Mahadayi (crisis) is the illegitimate child of Congress. @siddaramaiah government has no intention to give water to farmers".

Palienkar said that Karnataka had already started diverting water from the Mahadayi river which would have otherwise flowed into Goa adding that people of Karnataka could not be trusted.

"Karnataka is trying to destroy Goa's identity by diverting Mahadeyi water".

He said North Goa Collector had written a strong letter to her Belgaum counterpart asking to stop all construction works going on in contravention of the orders of the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal and the Supreme Court. "But we have told Karnataka that they are violating the directives of the apex court on the issue, and they should not do that", he said.
