Mark Wahlberg reportedly demanded $1.5m before approving Christopher Plummer's casting

However, it was revealed that Mark Wahlberg received $1.5m (£1.1m) to reshoot his scenes, while co-star Michelle Williams was paid less than $1,000, taking an $80 per diem fee instead. But according to USA Today, Wahlberg had a clause in his contract that gave him the ability to approve co-stars. She and director Ridley Scott both publicly said that they would return for the reshoots "for free" in order to complete the nine-day reshoot session which would replace controversial star Kevin Spacey with Oscar victor Christopher Plummer.

"What he said was, 'I will not approve Christopher Plummer unless you pay me.' And that's how he (expletive) them", said a source.

Although Wahlberg is yet to respond to the latest reports, they come after it was reported that Michelle Williams was paid less than $1,000 (£730) for the reshoot.

Another insider claims the actor's lawyer formally vetoed Plummer in a letter to financiers until his demands for payment had been met.

But it appears that it was perhaps more a case of hard bargaining on the part of Wahlberg's agents. According to The Washington Post, Wahlberg, the highest paid actor of the year, "along with manager Stephen Levinson and agency WME, have a reputation in Hollywood for driving a tough bargain".

Speaking about the situation, Ridley Scott notably didn't mention Wahlberg when he spoke of the cast's willingness to re-shoot large parts of the movie following Spacey being cut. Scott said that apart from Plummer and the film crew, everyone had done the shoot essentially for free, which is now contradicted by reports of Wahlberg's salary. "No, they all came in free". She had previously said of the reshoot: "I said I'd be wherever they needed me, whenever they needed me". And they could have my salary, they could have my holiday, whatever they wanted. "I wonder if the studio or Wahlberg will do something to make the situation less insane", he wrote.
