Marks & Spencer's brand new CURVE line hits stores

Marks & Spencer's brand new CURVE line hits stores

Marks and Spencer plans to pull its "cauliflower steak" from sale after being slammed for using "lots of plastic" for what is effectively a slice of veg.

The sliced cauliflower, which comes in plastic packaging with a separate sachet of lemon and herb drizzle, was being sold for twice the price of a whole, single cauliflower at the supermarket chain.

Yesterday, Sainsbury's was also criticised by shoppers for selling a brand of "organic" coconuts in plastic packaging.

Rachel Clarke, a self-confessed "foodie" living in Manchester, pointed out the irony of the product.

While Marks & Spencer has tried to appeal to their vegetarian customers by offering them a meat-free steak alternative, many people have expressed that the retailer has evidently missed the mark by overcharging for the product and sparing little thought for the environment.

The supermarket raised eyebrows on Tuesday after Twitter user Rachel Clarke shared a photo of the product, which was retailing for £2.

Jane Cook, a woman from Cardiff who runs a lifestyle blog called Hungry City Hippy, felt outraged by Marks & Spencer's lack of reasoned thought.

Alex Morss tweeted that the packaging was "100 per cent unnecessary".

"The amount of plastic and processing involved in this is ridiculous."Like you say, buy a cauliflower, wash it and cut (and use all of it)". It might put people off trying a vegan or vegetarian diet if that's on offer.

Style influencer Danielle Vanier consults on the collection; Danielle is a huge power player on the plus-size market, having amassed over 94,000 followers on Instagram, and is the ideal person to front the campaign given her passion for the project.

Waitrose is now selling the pasta alternative in plastic packaging for £1.49, while a whole loose butternut squash will set you back just 46p more at £1.95.

The Independent has reached out to Marks & Spencer for comment.
