Matt Patricia is reportedly 'likely' to land Lions job

Matt Patricia is reportedly 'likely' to land Lions job

It was speculated last week that New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia would likely become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions, but conflicting reports surfaced that the New York Giants were still very much in play.

The report, which cited unidentified league sources, also indicated that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and linebackers coach Brian Flores are finalists for head-coaching jobs around the league and may soon be leaving New England. The Lions will have to wait until the Patriots' playoff run to end before they can talk about any contract details with Patricia.

Patricia, 43, has been with the Patriots since 2004, elevated to defensive coordinator in 2012. The Patriots have finished in the top 10 in points allowed in all six of Patricia's seasons as defensive coordinator.

But the man now destined for one of those jobs is Patricia, one year after he interviewed for the head-coaching jobs with the Rams and Chargers.

In Detroit, Patricia will be reunited with Lions general manager Bob Quinn, an executive with the Patriots. Although we believed the Lions were the more attractive job overall, we also outlined some reasons why Patricia might want to choose the Giants over the Lions. During his 4 seasons in Detroit, Caldwell went 36-28, and 0-2 in the postseason.

Some outlets suggested Patricia was destined for the Lions, while others suggested he favored NY over Detroit.

The Lions fired Jim Caldwell at the conclusion of their 2017 season, finishing 9-7 and missing the playoffs.
