May wants Brexit deal that works for whole of United Kingdom - spokesman

EU "hearts are still open", to the United Kingdom reversing the Brexit vote, European Council President Donald Tusk told MEPs in Strasbourg Tuesday.

"As David Davis said: If a democracy cannot change its mind it ceases to be a democracy", Tusk said referring to a speech in 2012 by the U.K.'s Brexit Secretary, who was a backbench MP at the time.

A Downing Street spokesman told reporters the government's position was "unchanged": that we would consider making financial contributions for "specific policies and programmes where that is in our joint interest", such as scientific projects. "Our hearts are still open for you".

"Tusk said our door still remains open and I hope that that will be heard clearly in London", the former Luxembourg prime minister said.

Britain is set to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019, but negotiations on its departure and future EU-U.K. relations must be concluded by October to leave parliaments time to ratify any agreement.

A year and a half after Britain's shock referendum vote to leave the EU, Prime Minister Theresa May has still not set out what kind of relationship she wants with the bloc after Brexit.

"If there's no deal, if there's no comprehensive economic, trade and investment agreement, then we will be in big trouble in Europe, because the last time we were able to implement a free trade agreement was in 2011 with [South] Korea", he told the BBC in 2017.

Draft instructions for Michel Barnier, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, have revealed the bloc has toughened its stance ahead of talks over the transition period.

Britain, on the other hand, would enjoy a "one-off gain" of £38 billion in savings on its European Union budget contribution, and a £180 billion windfall from the "long-term gain" represented by "free trade, own-regulation and own-border-control". Please stop complaining. Please deliver.

"Every major political leader in Europe has a eurosceptic party looking over their shoulder, the National Front in France, the AfD in Germany and the Five Star Movement in Italy all waiting to hit them over the head with any deal the European Union gives the United Kingdom, saying we want the same".
