MLS announces competitive gaming league with EA Sports

The eMLS Cup, taking place this April at PAX East in Boston, will help determine the victor. This long list of clubs will each decide their own process to select a player from its region to represent it in eMLS competitive play.

Major League Soccer is joining the esports movement, announcing on Friday its partnership with EA Sports to create eMLS, a competitive Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 league that will feature top players from the US and Canada.

All but Atlanta United, D.C. United, Los Angeles FC, and Real Salt Lake will be represented in the series to determine who will represent MLS in the EA Sports' FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs. These playoffs will culminate in the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup in August.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is entering the world of esports in a big way, introducing a new Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 league in partnership with EA Sports.

Todd Sitrin, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Competitive Gaming Division at EA is hoping to "attract many more who view our competitions around the world". Asked for details, an MLS spokesperson told Polygon that "some teams may choose to have multiple players represent them", although clubs can send only one player to eMLS events. New York City FC became the first in the MLS to sign an esports player last April, and Christopher Holly said he was excited about eMLS.

This step forward into competitive gaming is a key component in our partnership with EA Sports to promote deeper engagement and connections between MLS supporters and millions of Federation Internationale de Football Association players around the world.

Teams like Manchester City, West Ham, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen have recently brought Federation Internationale de Football Association players into their teams to represent them in esports. The Philadelphia Flyers have already partnered with WorldGaming for the Snider Hockey Cup, a North American championship whose finals are in March. The victor of the Global Series Playoffs will automatically qualify for the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup 2018 that will take place in August.
