The 2017 rally in Washington, D.C., and hundreds of similar marches created solidarity for those denouncing Trump's views on abortion, immigration, LGBT rights and more. The 36-year-old attended the Women's March on Washington last year fuelled initially by anger at Trump's election, but returned home with a different focus.

"We want to celebrate these women leaders, and encourage more women to run and join them in the General Assembly", Ramos said.

"I think a year ago was that watershed moment of President Trump's election", Melbourne organiser Melissa Goffin told AAP.

FADEL: Yeah. They've taken it to the West Coast this year. "This year, I feel like I'm in it for the long haul". "I am going to keep working at this", said Glaven, a biologist from Mount Pleasant, Md.

"When the government shuts down, women still march", she said.

She said she chose the shorter way.

Marchers in Washington, New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and elsewhere donned pink "pussy hats", banged drums and hoisted anti-Trump placards carrying slogans like "Fight like a girl" and "A woman's place is in the White House".

"Every politician and legislator needs to be put on notice", Patton said.

This means that any march this year will be hosted by either an affiliated or unaffiliated chapter of the Women's March organization, not the national organization itself, according to a disclaimer.

In Las Vegas, a concerted effort was made to push for voter registration.

The march comes on the one-year anniversary of the inauguration of President Donald Trump, who was the target of numerous marchers Saturday. And Davis spoke with the passion of a preacher as she discussed the nation's history of discrimination and her past as a sexual-assault survivor.

"People were pretty damn mad last year, and they're pretty damn mad this year", Tamika Mallory, co-president of the Women's March board, told The Associated Press. Fawzia Mirza drew cheers from the crowd as she kicked off the event with a reference to the partial government shutdown, which began hours earlier.

"Ladies, we know our place", said Mosby, a Democrat up for re-election this year.

Diane Omari, who came to the march with 30 other men and women, held a sign reading "Trumpster for the Dumpster".

The atmosphere this year was different than the "kind of euphoria" marchers felt as their ranks grew to the hundreds of thousands, said Peggy Taylor, a NY tour guide.

Donald Trump's second year anniversary as the US President was met with widespread protests all across the country.

She added: Power to the peaceful, power to the people.

"I think past year was an outcry and now we're figuring out how to sustain change and make change in the longer term, which is harder", Murlas said.

The event features a slate of big names in the world of liberal activism: Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood; Melissa Harris-Perry, a professor and former MSNBC host; congressman and civil rights era icon John Lewis, D-Ga.; Alicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter movement.
