Nasa will use Uhuru Park for Raila oath: Norman Magaya

Nasa leader Raila Odinga holds the Bible while addressing his supporters at Homabay Stadium on January 27, 2018.

This comes at a time when the NASA Chief Raila Odinga has declared that he is not afraid of worldwide sanctions against him for being sworn in as the peoples President.

Police boss, Japhet Koome, has issued stern warning to those planning to hold meetings at Uhuru Park Grounds on January 30.

He said some supporters from other counties have already arrived in the city, while others are expected in the course of the day.

Yet, the National Super Alliance (NASA) has insisted that they were set for the day, and they were not going to change venue.

This is despite an announcement by the Nairobi County Government as well police warning that Uhuru Park will remain closed from Wednesday, January 23, until further notice to allow for the Park's renovation.

Despite the warning, Magaya said the park remains their top choice. "Option one is Uhuru Park, option two is Uhuru Park, option three is Uhuru Park and if option three is not possible, then the only option is Uhuru Park", said a defiant Magaya.

"We have no option whatsoever to change the venue, the event will be largely peaceful and we urge our supporters to turn up with white handkerchiefs as a sign of peace".

On the legality of the oath taking, Mr Magaya said everything would be done according to the Constitution. "Let police not provoke citizens and cause unnecessary violence".

"You can see how Koome is literally struggling to justify why they should not allow this swearing-in to take place", he said.

The CEO said that in 2016, the government asked a church to conduct an event at the park yet NASA also had a function, so "there are just excuses".

Mr Magaya said the coalition is sure that no other group was scheduled to use the park as claimed by authorities. All these are manufactured to create tension.

The other co-principals are Musalia Mudavadi of Amani National Congress and Bungoma senator Moses Wetang'ula who is Ford Kenya leader.

Deputy President William Ruto has urged the public to stay away from the Nasa event, saying Kenyans had decided on their leaders in August and the focus should now be on development.
