National Weather Service Reports Snow Totals, What To Expect After Storm

The first flakes should begin falling after midnight along the coastline Thursday, and then spread inland into the overnight and early morning hours, according to Storm Team 4. The winter storm warning is in effect for portions of southern CT and Suffolk County. Significant drifting of the snow is likely with drifts of 18 to 24 inches possible, especially in exposed areas.

Damage to trees and power lines are possible and unsecured Christmas decorations still outside may be blown away or damaged.

As snow continues to fall along the northeastern seaboard Thursday afternoon, the latest National Weather Service forecast predicts the storm will continue until 9 p.m. along the coast and let up sooner elsewhere.

Heavy snow is also ongoing in New England, including Boston, where visibility had dropped as low as one-sixteenth of a mile as of noon.

Gusty winds through the period will create whiteout conditions at times, so drivers are urged to take that into their travel plans. Battery-powered or crank-powered radios are also advised in order to keep abreast of any weather or safety developments.

The last flakes will fall on Thursday evening, but even after the snow moves out at night, strong wind gusts of 40 miles per hour or more will lead to areas of blowing and drifting snow.

The Long Island Rail Road anticipates running normal service, as conditions warrant; LIRR staff will monitor the storm as it progresses and make any adjustments necessary.

In addition, the coastal flood advisory is in effect from 8 a.m.to 2 p.m. for Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties, where minor coastal flooding is anticipated.

This storm is forecast to bring heavy snow and strong winds, especially to coastal sections of western ME and New Hampshire, where blizzard conditions are expected.

LongIsland.com will issue updates on the winter storm set to hit our area as they become available.
