Netanyahu: US Must Mediate Between Palestine and Israel

"EU's Mogherini reiterated that the only realistic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is based on two states, with Jerusalem as the capital of both the state of Israel and the state of Palestine".

These views were expressed by Jordan's King Abdullah while talking to US Vice President Mike Pence, in Amman on Sunday.

Traveling to Israel just as Palestinians have condemned recent decisions by President Donald Trump's administration, Pence will arrive in the region as a longtime stalwart supporter of Israel who has questioned the notion of the USA serving as an "honest broker" in the stalled peace process.

"The Palestinian Authority has been absent from direct negotiations since 2014".

An evangelical Christian with strong ties to the Holy Land, Pence this time comes packing two key policy decisions in his bags that have always been top priorities for him: designating Jerusalem as Israel's capital and curtailing aid for Palestinians.

Pence was in Egypt on the first leg of a three-country tour that includes stops in Jordan and Israel.

Pence even said that they aren't planning to continue negotiations on immigration "until they re-open the government".

The king called Pence's visit a mission "to rebuild trust and confidence" in the two-state solution. Jordan vehemently opposes such a move if taken ahead of an Israeli-Palestinian partition deal. The US has called on the European Union to also recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel's government.

An worldwide consensus has long held that the city's final status should be decided through negotiations, which was also USA policy going back decades.

Pence said after the meeting that he told the Egyptian president that the United States is "absolutely committed to preserving the status quo with regard to holy sites in Jerusalem, that we have come to no final resolution about boundaries or other issues that will be negotiated", the Associated Press reported.

The site is located in east Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.

"It may be well that a minister will raise the question of a recognition of a Palestinian state, but such a recognition is a sovereign decision by every member state, " the official said.

He will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday before addressing the country's parliament later in the day - a speech that Israeli Arab lawmakers will boycott, calling Pence "dangerous and messianic".

"We will discuss the efforts of the Trump administration to block Iran's aggression and the Iranian nuclear programme, and of course, advancing security and peace in the region", he said ahead of Sunday's cabinet meeting.

His trip will also follow Tuesday's announcement that the U.S.is withholding $65 million of a planned $125 million funding installment to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, which provides health care, education and social services to Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
