Next iOS update to allow users to disable throttling

Apple will release a test version of its iOS software next month that shows users the health of their batteries and will let them turn off a phone-slowing feature meant to prevent sudden shutdowns in iPhones with older batteries, Cook said in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday.

Moreover, he says that this forthcoming update will give users the option to disable the throttling to maintain normal CPU performance, but will be at risk of unexpected shutdowns.

"We're going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it's very, very transparent".

The update comes after Apple made headlines for purposefully slowing older iPhone batteries and then offering $29 battery replacements in response.

"We will tell somebody we are reducing the performance by some amount in order not to have an unexpected restart and if you don't want it, you can turn it off", he said.

According to a new report from Reuters, the launch of the probe follows a complaint filed by Seoul-based civic group Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty (CUCS) against Apple CEO Tim Cook and Daniel Dicicco, head of Apple Korea.

Apple on Friday replied to an inquiry from the Shanghai Consumer Council over the slowing down of older iPhones after iOS updates to offset battery performance.

However the firm said: "We have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades". The performance of lithium-ion batteries worsens over time and this can lead to phones turning off abruptly to protect their components.

It said the company will cut the price of out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements from late January to December 2018. The price will return to $79 in 2019.

"We deeply apologize for anybody that thinks we had some other kind of motivation", Cook told ABC.

The firm is already reportedly facing legal action over claims of defrauding customers by making old phones slower without warning so people buy new ones.
