North India Continues To Reel Under Cold Conditions

The maximum temperature here was recorded at 23.7 degrees Celsius, four notches above the normal, a Meteorological (MeT) department official said.

Jammu/Srinagar: The cold wave sweeping through Jammu and Kashmir further tightened its grip on the valley even as people in Jammu prepared to celebrate the Lohri festival on Saturday. With the visibility recorded at 400 metres in the early hours, the minimum temperature was recorded 5.5 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab, Amritsar's minimum settled at 4.6 degrees Celsius, while Ludhiana and Patiala braved cold weather conditions with low of 4.7 and 5.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The town recorded a low of -15.0C, a Met department official said.

Leh, in Ladakh region, had experienced an improvement in temperature the previous night when the mercury rose almost six degrees to settle at a low of minus 7.7 degrees Celsius. The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day long "Chillai-Khurd" (small cold) and a 10-day long "Chillai-Bachha" (baby cold).

Kanpur and Bareilly were among the coldest places in the state recording a low of 5 and 5.4 degrees Celsius respectively. "On an average the minimum temperatures rose by up to two notches at many parts of the region", the MeT official said.

However, the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where ski slopes are under several feet of snow, witnessed an improvement of about 3 degree from Thursday in the night temperature and settled at minus 5.4 degree, which is above normal.

Bathinda, Halwara, Faridkot and Pathankot experienced a low at 4.3, 2.9, 4 and 5.3 degrees Celsius, respectively. Fog was reported from parts of both states.

Himachal Pradesh reeled under cold wave conditions with some respite for people in high-altitude areas of the state with day temperatures rising by a few notches. Sriganganagar was the coldest place in the state with the minimum at 3.4 degrees Celsius, the MeT office in Jaipur said.
