North Korea likely to participate in Winter Olympics, official says

South Korean opposition parties have struck a cautious tone over the latest developments, warning against making concessions to the North to secure its Olympic participation.

In a tweet, Trump, who hurled fresh insults at the North Korean leader this week, took credit for any dialogue. He is recovering after being shot five times by his former comrades.

Seoul's unification ministry also said the government will closely coordinate with Washington about the meeting.

Trump soon responded: "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!" It's likely the North will refrain from provocations during the Games.

Seoul and organizers are keen for the North to take part in the Games to help ease tensions. "This isn't going to happen overnight, as we've seen, but it's a unsafe situation", Haley said on ABC's "This Week".

Geng expressed hope "all relevant parties" would take advantage of the Games to "bring the issue back to the correct track of peaceful settlement through dialogue and consultation".

His comments came as US President Donald Trump went a step further and said he was open to holding direct talks with Kim under certain conditions. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis insisted the move was a practical necessity to accommodate the Olympics and was not a political gesture.

Tillerson called the Koreas meeting a sign that the US-led campaign to isolate North Korea was working.

The others are the vice-chairman of the CPRC, the vice-minister of physical culture and sports, the director of the CPRC and a member of the North's Olympic committee.

Figure skating pair Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik are the only North Korean athletes who have qualified. With ticket sales for the Games reportedly lagging, the South is probably desperate to do whatever it can to keep the Olympics from being a failure, something that would be a blow to South Korea both in terms of reputation and economics.

North Korea's agreement to South Korea's offer came after an agreement that the United States and South Korea will be postponing any future military drills until March, after the Paralympics. The North said the practical details will be discussed by exchanging documents at the communication room at Panmunjeom up until the talks begin. "But I would be... absolutely, I would do that (speak with Kim)".

Pompeo said United States intelligence had provided an understanding of North Korea's capabilities and intent, and got the pace of the nuclear program "mostly right".

In recent months, North Korea has held multiple missile launches and its sixth and most powerful nuclear test - purportedly of a hydrogen bomb - in violation of United Nations resolutions banning such activity.

North Korea has come under increasing global pressure in the past year over its nuclear weapons programme and repeated testing of conventional missiles.
