North Korea Prepares Massive Military Parade For Olympics Eve: Satellite Images

The Koreas' plan to do so again at next month's Pyeongchang Olympics hasn't generated much enthusiasm among South Koreans, with many conservatives asking why their athletes can not carry their own national flag during the first Winter Olympics on their soil. The name displayed during the marches was "Korea", although the North and South competed separately for medals.

The North also identified Hyon as head of the art troupe visiting South Korea in coming weeks, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

It was unclear whether the cancellation cast any doubt over the preparations for the North's participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea's Pyeongchang, an apparent diplomatic breakthrough after months of high tension over the North's nuclear and missile program.

The two Koreas reached a package of Olympics-related rapprochement deals on Wednesday, including marching together at the opening ceremony and fielding their first joint Olympic team, in women's ice hockey.

North Korea is sending only a handful of athletes, however, it is sending over hundreds of cheerleaders and cultural performers, including an orchestra with over a hundred members.

This week's agreements require approval from the International Olympic Committee, which is to meet officials from the two Koreas and the Pyeongchang organizing committee at IOC headquarters in Switzerland on Saturday.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has expressed support for the creation of a unified inter-Korean women's ice hockey team for the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics, a US broadcaster reported Friday.

Invitations sent to diplomats and satellite imagery suggest Pyongyang is preparing for a major military parade on the eve of the Pyeongchang games, which begin February 9 and will feature North Korean athletes and cheering squads.

The demands came to light since last week's talks between North and South Korea - the first sit-down between the two countries in more than two years.

The Swiss hockey federation said in comments reported by South Korea's Yonhap news agency that this was "not fair and distorts competition".

The North issued a veiled threat Sunday that it could cancel its plans to send an Olympic delegation to protest what it called South Korea's "sordid acts" that chilled the prospect for inter-Korean reconciliation.

The North's continued development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions has spurred more sanctions and talk of possible military strikes by U.

The North has warned that it will not agree to more reunions for families split by the Korean War unless the defectors, and another woman who fled from elsewhere, are returned.

"This is typical. (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's) family playbook goes back several decades", Chang said. Its performance would be the first since 2002.
