Northern and Midlands jobs most at risk from robots

A report has revealed the rise in robots could put almost 36,000 jobs in Aberdeen at risk in the next 12 years.

He said: "Many manufacturing jobs in Sunderland are actually leaner, more highly automated than elsewhere in the United Kingdom and this is already helping to attract new investment".

And, even though the south will witness similar patterns, the number of people finding themselves displaced by automation and out of work will be fewer than their northern counterparts, a think-tank warns.

While the debate rages on about the big-picture impact, a new report out today by the Centre for Cities think tank argues there will be significant geographic implications from the huge changes afoot.

However, the threat is not spread evenly across the country, with cities in the North and Midlands more exposed to job losses than affluent places in the South of England.

Across the United Kingdom, an average of one in five existing jobs in cities are likely to be displaced by 2030 - a total of 3.6 million jobs - with retail occupations, customer service positions and warehouse jobs among the most at risk.

Around 1.4m existing jobs in British cities are in occupations predicted to grow by 2030.

The report further details the development of new industries will produce new jobs which do not now exist, as the rise of sectors, such as the IT industry did. Only 1 in 10 jobs predicted to grow by 2030 in cities such as Mansfield, Blackburn and Sunderland are in high skilled private sector occupations, while 3 out of 10 are in low skilled private sector occupations.

For example, nearly 50% of jobs projected to grow over the next few decades will be in high-skilled private sector roles, which in turn would help southern cities create more jobs in emergent industries in the future.

The good news, however, is that highly-skilled occupations such as media professionals, engineering roles and hospitality and leisure managers are likely to grow says the report.

Wearsider Paul Swinney is Head of Policy and Research at Centre for Cities fears one of the factors could lead to a widening of the north-south employment divide.

Centre for Cities' reseachers fear automation and globalisation could exaggerate the political divisions exposed by the European Union referendum in 2016. The time to act is now - national and local leaders need to ensure that people in cities across the North and Midlands can share in the benefits these changes could offer.

"We also need greater investment to help adults adapt to the changing labour market".

"In an evermore divided country, it's increasingly clear that a one-size-fits-all approach from central government is inadequate to address the myriad issues that different places face", said Carter.

"The government needs to give cities more powers and resources to tackle the issue that automation and globalisation will present".
