Nvidia wants retailers to prioritize gamers over cryptocurrency miners

German site ComputerBase.de has reported that NVIDIA is now not too happy with the current situation of GPU price inflation due to the bulk buying of cryptocurrency miners.

The world of cryptocurrency is forever rising in popularity, with businesses and savvy-minded consumers hopping in on the bandwagon with the hope of earning a profit.

This has prompted some graphics cards to rise over double that of their original retail price. NVIDIA's having none of that, and as much as any company likes money, NVIDIA doesn't want to lose customers because gamers can't afford a new GPU in the current climate.

For example, the GeForce GTX 1070 is the card many gamers would want to get, but looking on Newegg at the time of writing in the USA, the cheapest model is $889 - and on the United Kingdom site, it's £707. But we did notice that the more powerful Nvidia cards seemed limited in stock, and Overclockers didn't have the option to buy multiple GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 cards at once.

Or as PC Gamer's reports, "Right now is the worst time in the history of graphics cards to buy or upgrade this all-important gaming component". "All activities related to our GeForce product line are targeted at our main audience", Nvidia spokesman Boris Böhles told ComputerBase. This has hit the supplies and therefore the cost of AMD GPUs especially hard, as they typically have a better return on investment than NVIDIA GPUs, but miners are turning to GeForce cards when that is what is available, so both sides are being impacted.

This is simply a request from Nvidia, not an instruction and therefore might not have any effect on the industry as it now stands.

Nvidia speaking out against the practice is not the least bit surprising given that there's no doubt that this practice is hurting Nvidia's G-Sync market. What, if any, restrictions are placed on GeForce GPUs will remain up to the individual retailer, though if the situation doesn't improve NVIDIA could always just make that recommendation stronger.
