Patriots rout Titans to head back to AFC ti game

The offense drove 91 yards in 16 plays, and the only thing that could stop them was the end of the field.

Now, they'll have a chance to play for yet another AFC championship.

The Tennessee Titans clearly were overmatched Saturday night, as evidenced by the 21-point margin of their loss to New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in the AFC Divisional Round. It was his 26th career playoff victory (which is more than all but three National Football League franchises not named the Patriots), and Brady became the oldest QB in National Football League history to win a postseason game. James White caught a touchdown pass and ran for another, and Danny Amendola had 11 catches for 112 yards.

None of that showed on the field Saturday. The second TD was White's first rushing score since his Super Bowl LI overtime game victor nearly a year ago.

"I love Brandon", Brady said. "It just goes with the territory".

Marcus Mariota tossed an early touchdown pass to give the Titans an early 7-0 lead. Mariota finished 22 of 37 for 254 yards and two touchdowns with 37 rushing yards.

Stat of the week: This marks the eighth straight year that the Patriots will host a divisional-round playoff game, adding to their own record.

"It had an impact, obviously", Mularkey said.

The Patriots benefited from two controversial calls in second quarter: an offensive pass interference on Titans wide receiver Eric Decker on third down and a false start on a New England punt that got overturned to defensive encroachment. Last week, they earned their first postseason victory in 14 years, rallying from a 21-3 halftime deficit to beat Kansas City in the wild-card round.

The Patriots defense allowed the Titans to get in with a garbage time score, but by that point, it didn't matter at all. New England's been in the playoffs consistently. The Patriots were able to get the ball back again, and they got into deep field goal range.

The Pats worked nearly exclusively out of "11" personnel, favoring three receivers instead of two tight ends. Lewis ran for 896 yards and six touchdowns and caught 32 passes for 214 yards and three scores during the regular season. First, Dion Lewis busted big plays in the screen game and on the ground before James White took over at the goal line and grabbed a Tom Brady shovel pass for five-yard scamper.

Lewis landed on top of the defender, then got up and continued to the end zone.

Despite his gripes with the officiating, Mularkey wasn't delusional in thinking Tennessee could have pulled off the upset if those calls went the other way.

After talking about the punt play, Mularkey was asked about another questionable call, and this time, he could barely muster an answer, and that's likely because he didn't want to get hit with a huge fine by the NFL. Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons gained 37 yards on three carries a week later.

White also scored early in the quarter on a 5-yard pass that was essentially a handoff. He did not return.

Patriots: Right tackle LaAdrian Waddle left with a knee injury early in the third quarter.

The Titans also committed 10 penalties in the game after a season in which they had the second-fewest in the NFL.

The Jaguars are playing in the conference title game for just the third time in franchise history, and first since losing to Tennessee during the 1999 season. But it's the most for a tight end.
