Pique agrees new long-term Barcelona contract

His buyout clause has been set at 500 million euros.

Pique has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2022, the La Liga leaders confirmed today.

"The centre back started out in the club's junior ranks, at the youngest level available at the time - U11 B - and steadily progressed through the different age groups".

Pique is a product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy system and a man who has helped the La Liga giants to an enviable collection of silverware since returning to the club from Manchester United in the summer of 2008.

Lionel Messi missed a penalty as Oscar Melendo scored the winning goal to end Barca's 29-game unbeaten run.

"This season he has been one of the players most frequently used by Ernesto Valverde, with 25 appearances and two goals to his name".

Pique's new deal contains the highest release clause of any Barca player behind Lionel Messi, who signed a contract last November that includes a Euro 700m buyout option.

Signing for the club in the first year of the Pep Guardiola era, he has won six La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, five Copa del Reys and three Club World Cups. His current contract was to expire later this year. At worldwide level the defender was part of the Spain squads that won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Barcelona now tops the Spanish League with nine points leads over Atletico Madrid.
