Qatari royal releases video saying he's being 'held against his will'

Qatari royal releases video saying he's being 'held against his will'

Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Thani said in a video posted online that he is now detained in UAE and not allowed to go out of the country.

'I just want to inform you that if anything happens to me, don't blame Qatar'.

"Sheikh Abdullah has had unrestrained mobility and freedom of movement during his stay in the UAE", WAM cited an unnamed foreign ministry official as saying.

"He expressed his desire to leave the country where all procedures have been facilitated without any interferences hindering this matter", the source added. It did not say where the sheikh went.

Qatari officials also accused Gulf rivals of seeking regime change in Doha and replacing Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani with Sheikh Abdullah - who belongs to a branch of the Al-Thani family that has seen its power eroded but is still well-connected in the Gulf.

In response to the video, Qatar´s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Lulwa al-Khater, said Doha was monitoring the situation.

In its new complaint, Qatar said the "repetition of this bad incident" was evidence of the UAE violating worldwide law.

In June 2017, four Arab nations including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a trade and diplomatic siege on Qatar, accusing Doha of destabilizing the region with its support for extremism.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia have cultivated even closer ties in recent years.

In August, Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman to reach a consent on opening borders for Qatari pilgrims to perform the Hajj ritals in Mecca. The two countries announced plans of forming a tighter relationship in December, helping torpedo an already troubled meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Its military has halted some regional exercises to put pressure on the GCC, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, to resolve the crisis.

US President Donald Trump has made comments supporting the Arab nations' efforts at taking a stand against terrorism.

The complaint was submitted by Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar's ambassador to the UN.
