Quake strikes off the coast of Baja California

Its depth was measured at 6 miles.

"There are no reports of people being affected or material damage", Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto posted on Twitter.

It was picked up some 50 miles north-east of the town of Loreto. It's known for attracting American tourists, who often camp in recreational vehicles along the coastline.

Yolanda Vallejo, owner of Rivera del Mar RV Park in Loreto, said the quake didn't even give her a start.

Mexico is situated on top of three tectonic plates and is one of the world's most active regions for earthquakes. There have been no reports of people in San Diego County feeling the quake. The Zone is a seismic area which lies between the opening to the Gulf and Los Cabos on the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula, to the San Andreas fault, which runs through the USA state of California.

It comes a few months after a severe, 7.1-magnitude quake hit Mexico City, killing hundreds of people and toppling buildings.
