RAF fighter jet scrambled to intercept Russian planes in United Kingdom airspace

A RAF spokesman said: "We can confirm that Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth scrambled to monitor two Blackjack bombers approaching the United Kingdom area of interest".

Two Typhoon fighter jets have been sent to escort the Russian planes that were flying towards the northern tip of Scotland.

Two Typhoon jets took off from RAF Lossiemouth at 9:30am this morning and it is understood that the situation is ongoing.

The RAF is yet to confirm the type of Russian planes as the "live operation" is still in progress. "At no point did the Russian aircraft enter sovereign United Kingdom airspace".

The response from the quick reaction alert (QRA) aircraft to a suspected Russian plane heading towards United Kingdom airspace comes amid tensions between the West and Russia.

The unidentified Russian plane was heading towards the United Kingdom from the north and had been monitored by NATO allies.

Russia's military has also sought to probe the resolve of naval forces, with warships being diverted to monitor passing naval vessels.
