There are two new entries this year: the Ketogenic (or "Keto") Diet and the Nutritarian Diet.

Previous research has shown that people who follow the DASH diet may be able to reduce their blood pressure by a few points in just two weeks.

And not all diets are flawless, in fact, some can be extremely unhealthy - especially if they make you give up food groups, do cleanses or replace your meals with supplements and shakes.

No single diet is the best for all of us.
The specialists looked at 40 diets, rating them on how easy they are to follow, their ability to produce short-term and long-term weight loss, nutritional completeness, safety and their potential for preventing and managing diabetes and heart disease.

"What really works is adopting something that you can stick with that will keep you healthy for a long time", said Rachel Franklin, MD, the Medical Director at OU Physicians. "The best diets are the ones that focus on balance and variety".

Here is a breakdown of the diets that rounded out the top five in U.S. News and World Report's 2018 Best Diets ranking.

DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, and along with lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, it's associated with lowering the risk of several types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, heart failure, kidney stones, reduced risk of developing diabetes and slowing the progression of kidney disease.

"The DASH and Mediterranean diet are consistently ranked as number one because they don't completely eliminate any foods", Sharp, who runs Abbey's Kitchen, said. The plant-centered diet emphasizes foods that are nutrient dense, such as kale and other leafy greens.

A study funded by the same unit of more than 400 adults with prehypertension, or stage 1 high blood pressure, found that the combination of a low-salt diet with DASH substantially lowers systolic blood pressure. The diet limits daily cholesterol intake while pushing more foods with fiber in order to help dieters manage high cholesterol without medication, according to U.S. News and World Report.
