Roethlisberger says he'll return to Steelers in 2018

Roethlisberger says he'll return to Steelers in 2018

Tomlin called the 45-42 playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC divisional round a "very disappointing end to an outstanding season", which included a 13-3 regular-season record and a No. 2 playoff seed.

A report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday said Roethlisberger has told his teammates he'd like to play at least three more seasons.

"I truly have never said I don't want to run it and I don't have the freedom to check to the quarterback sneak because we don't have that call if we're not in the huddle", Roethlisberger said. You'll hear about it as they unfold, I'm sure, if there's anything to be heard. "I've asked for that and he laughs at me and says, 'Ben, maybe in your younger days, not now.' I literally, I still ask for that sneak I would love the quarterback sneak".

The Steelers are expected to use the franchise tag on running back Le'Veon Bell, something that has not set right with Bell.

Of course, there's still a chance - there's always a chance - the Steelers draft a quarterback early this year and start to lay the groundwork for finding Roethlisberger's successor, much like the New England Patriots did with Jimmy Garoppolo in 2014 before trading him to the San Francisco 49ers earlier this season amid Tom Brady's continued success.

"I've actually asked Coach [Mike] Tomlin when we get to like the two-yard-line, two-point play, to spread the defense out, go empty and run quarterback draw", Roethlisberger said. "Some contracts are up, some contracts aren't", Tomlin said.

If a change is coming, Roethlisberger seems to be on board with Todd Haley calling it. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported over the weekend that Haley's job could potentially be in jeopardy amid an ongoing rocky relationship with the quarterback. Roethlisberger has played all 14 of his National Football League seasons with the Steelers. Roethlisberger downplayed any issues he might have with the offensive coordinator.

"That's one of the best things about that guy", Tomlin said of Roethlisberger. "You might butt heads at times, but that doesn't mean there's any problem or any personal problems". Sometimes it feels like he does it 40 times in a single season.
