SA call up Olivier, Ngidi for 2nd Test

SA call up Olivier, Ngidi for 2nd Test

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the ongoing Test against India is set to miss the remainder of the series as well.

Ngidi, 21, is uncapped at test level but has played three Twenty20 internationals and is regarded as one of the finest up-and-coming fast bowling talents in South Africa.

He bowled with rhythm, speed and craft before leaving the field in pain on Saturday, the second day of the first Test here. He was seen on crutches in the morning and post the match but came to bat when South Africa needed him to, in the second innings. He had made his Test debut against Sri Lanka a year ago in Johannesburg where he took five wickets in the match but has not been able to establish himself as a regular member of the side against strong competition.

Styen's type of injury normally takes 4-6 weeks to heal, Moosajee said, nearly certainly ruling Steyn out of the rest of the series against India and putting a question mark over whether he can once again regain full fitness ahead of Australia's tour in March. There are fears the 34-year-old speedster's career might be up just as he approaches Pollock's record.

The Newlands match was Steyn's return to test cricket after 13 months out with a broken shoulder and torn muscles.

"I really felt for him because he'd done a lot of hard work to get back to where he was‚" South Africa coach Ottis Gibson said on Monday his team won by 72 runs‚ effectively in three days.

Moosajee said the latest setback had nothing to do with his injury history or workload in the match.
